La bandiera è una sovrapposizione della bandiera d'Inghilterra: croce rossa di San Giorgio su un campo bianco, croce decussata di Sant'Andrea bianca su un campo blu in rappresentanza della Scozia, croce di San Patrizio rossa su un campo bianco in rappresentanza dell'Irlanda del Nord.
La posizione delle diagonali create dalla croce di San Patrizio e di Sant'Andrea deve dare pari peso alle due entità. .

dal popolo dei celti Britanni derivato dalla parola Pretani o Priteni antichi abitanti che vi abitarono fino all'arrivo nel V secolo degli Angli e dei Sassoni. I Britanni si isolarono allora in Galles, in Cornovaglia, in Scozia e Irlanda. In greco Bretannia.

gli inglesi chiamavano la loro isola Bretagna come il nome della regione di Bretagna in Francia su cui rivendicavano diritti dinastici dall'epoca di William the Conqueror.
