Cassino 15/2/1944

Il nuovo attacco deciso da Clark ha inizio. il 15 febbraio. Viene bombardata l'abbazia di Montecassino. E' una battaglia che dura tre giorni ma alla fine il corpo d'armata neozelandese viene respinto. Il 15 marzo c'è un altro tentativo ma gli angloamericani incassano un'altra sconfitta. Gli alleati decidono di sospendere le operazioni. I neozelandesi vengono sostituiti dal 13° Corpo d'armata britannico. Il mese di aprile é impiegato per la riorganizzazione delle forze e per la messa a punto del piano "Diadem" (ideato da John Harding, capo di stato maggiore di Alexander).

L'11 maggio scatta l'operazione. La prima fase é deludente. Ma dopo qualche battuta d'arresto la potente macchina comincia a marciare a pieno regime e il fronte del Garigliano crolla. La via per Roma é aperta. La tortura della città sta per finire. E' passata un'eternità di mesi dal momento dello sbarco ad Anzio, in quel 22 gennaio 1944 che ha acceso la speranza. Nei giorni precedenti la liberazione (dal Gianicolo si sentono i fragori delle artiglierie germaniche e alleate impegnate negli ultimi duelli) Roma vive i suoi ultimi momenti di disperazione, di alienazione bellica, di disumanizzazione.

Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia (CSIR) 10/7/1941

Costituito 10 luglio 1941, il C.S.I.R. arrivò in Russia a luglio-agosto 1941 e fu subordinato inizialmente a Generaloberst Eugen Ritter von Schobert dell'11a armata. Il 14 agosto 1941 il C.S.I.R. fu trasferito sotto  il controllo del Generaloberst Ewald von Kleist del I Gruppo Panzer (rinominato 1 armata Panzer il 25 ottobre 1941). Rimase sotto il comando di Kleist fino al 3 giugno 1942 quando fu subordinato al 17a armata del Generaloberst Richard Ruoff.
 
Il comandante originale, il Generale di corpo d'Armata Francesco Zingales fu trasferito a Vienna per malattia durante le fasi iniziali di trasporto in Russia e sostituito dal Generale di Corpo d'Armata Giovanni Messe il 14 luglio 1941.
 
La forza iniziale fu di 3,000 ufficiali e 59,000 uomini, 5,500 veicoli di motore e 4,000 cavalli e muli.
 
Il C.S.I.R. fu sciolto il 10 luglio 1942 per formare il XXXV corpo d'armata dell'8a armata di Italo Gariboldi sul Fronte Orientale (ARMIR). Messe rimase al comando del XXXV corpo fino al 1 novembre 1942 quando FUsostituito dal Generale di corpo d'Armata Francesco Zingales (decorato dalla Germania con la Croce di Cavaliere di Ferro il 23 gennaio 1942)

52nd Torino Semi-Motorized Infantry Division: Generale di Divisione Luigi Manzi; later Generale di Divisione Roberto Lerici (Divisional Infantry Commander: Colonnello, later Generale di Brigata Ugo de Carolis*) – 81st and 82nd Torino Infantry Regiments (Colonnello Carlo Piccinini and Colonnello Evaristo Fioravanti respectively) and the 52nd Motorized Artillery Regiment (Colonnello Giuseppe Ghiringhelli). * On 12 December 1941, Generale di Brigata Ugo de Carolis was killed in action in southern Russia; he was posthumously awarded the Medaglia d’Oro al Valore Militare. On 9 February 1942, he was honored by Germany with a posthumous award of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.

3rd Celere Division “Principe Amedeo Duca d’Aosta”: Generale di Brigata Mario Marazzani (Vice Commander: Generale di Brigata Gioacchino Solinas) – 3rd “Savoia Cavalleria” Regiment (Colonnello Weiss Poccetti), the 5th “Lancieri di Novara” Regiment (Colonnello Egidio Giusiana), the 3rd Bersaglieri Regiment (Colonnello Aminto Caretto), the 3rd Horse Artillery Regiment (Colonnello Cesare Colombo) and the III Gruppo Carri Veloci “San Giorgio” (61 L3 tankettes in four squadrons).

22o Gruppo Autonomo: Maggiore Giovanni Borzoni. Composed of the 359a, 362a, 369a and 371a Squadriglie equipped with 51 Macchi C.200 “Saetta” fighters; the group arrived in Russia in August 1941. During its service on the Eastern Front, the 22o Gruppo Autonomo claimed 14 Soviet fighters and several bombers without suffering any losses. The leading Italian fighter pilot on the Eastern Front was Sottotenente Giuseppe “Bepi” Biron of the 369a Squadriglie who shot down at least four Russian aircraft. Biron scored at least eight total kills during World War II.

16º Gruppo Autonomo Osservazione Aerea: Tenente Colonnello Bruno G. Ghierini. Composed of the 34a, 119a and 128a Squadriglie equipped with Caproni Ca.311 reconnaissance/observation aircraft; the group arrived in Russia in mid-August 1941.

Sezione Trasporti [Transport Section] composed of the 245a and 246a Squadriglie equipped with Savoia Marchetti SM.81 “Pipistrello” tri-motor transport aircraft.
